Elliotte Friedman immediately pointed to three clubs that had taken a sharp left turn in the Dylan Larkin market.
Speaking on the FAN Hockey Show, Friedman mentioned the teams he continues to hear about Larkin: Tampa, Dallas, and Minnesota. Those three, a great deal.
Who isn’t included in that list? It was not the rebuilding Atlantic teams that were the subject of all the talk during the week. Teams attempting to win right away are Friedman’s loudest names.
All of that is reconsidered. There’s a chance that a captain who sought Detroit’s assistance may find himself in a location where there is already an abundance of aid.
Start at Dallas. Jason Robertson’s 96-point season helped the Stars amass 112 points, the third-highest total in the league. Almost unjust is adding Larkin to that group.
Friedman’s whole remarks are brief but packed, with three franchises mentioned in one breath as if he’s witnessed the board develop.
Where Larkin winds up is determined by salary space, not potential.
This race has one hitch that all competitors face. Larkin’s $8.7 million isn’t furniture, and winning clubs have thin cap sheets. You enter a crowded space.
Tampa is the most obvious example. Jake Guentzel and Brandon Hagel are eating big money behind Nikita Kucherov, who recently penned a 130-point monster. Where does Julien Brisebois locate the space?
Dallas has the identical feel. Jim Nill’s team already has Wyatt Johnston rapidly developing, and Mikko Rantanen alone is worth $12 million.
Minnesota might be the best match of the bunch. Bill Guerin has been cleaning out veterans during the offseason, and a 29-year-old number one should be in the middle of a center hole after the Wild reached 104 points.
Therefore, the actual assessment is neither talent nor desire. It’s maths. Detroit will need legitimate pieces on top, and each of these organizations must remove to add.
Here’s my analysis: Minnesota is the most logical choice, both on the rink and on the books. The other two would be required to gut anything worthwhile in order to earn the income.
and the wild card It has not been confirmed whether these three are even on Larkin’s approved list. The names on a suitor list and a shortlist are not usually the same.
Yzerman now has leverage from being in charge, interest from possible candidates, and a captain who wants to leave. The individual who blinks first on price will make the next move.
