Peter Chiarelli buzz has Oilers fans fearing the worst

Peter Chiarelli is being talked about again in NHL discussions, and with Kris Knoblauch coaching the Oilers, fans in Edmonton really don’t want to see him come back.

Recent news has linked Chiarelli to a search for a new general manager in the NHL, even though he currently works for the St. Louis Blues. Just hearing his name again brings back bad memories for Oilers fans.

To be clear, there’s no indication that the Oilers are actually making this change. However, as soon as Chiarelli’s name comes up, Edmonton fans react quickly because they remember how his time there ended in 2019.

That’s why any talk about him coming back seems like a bad idea right from the start. The Oilers are aiming to win now, and bringing back someone from the past would send a confusing message to the players and the fans.

The team already has the people in charge for making decisions. Stan Bowman is the general manager, and Knoblauch is the head coach, so there’s no need for anyone from the past to complicate things.

Timing is also important. Right now, Edmonton’s record is 32-26-8 with 72 points, and they really need to focus on improving, not reminiscing. The team has scored 233 goals, but they only have a goal differential of 5.

Fans can handle taking risks if it looks like they are moving forward. But it’s much harder for them to accept risks if it seems like the team is reopening issues they were happy to get past.

Edmonton needs to focus on moving forward.

The Oilers’ recent performance is adding to the pressure. They are 4-6-0 in their last 10 games and just lost 7-2 in Dallas, so the main goal should be to fix the lineup and pay attention to details around the net and defensive zone.
That is why the idea of Chiarelli coming back, even if it’s just a rumor, doesn’t sit well. Fans are looking for new ideas, smarter salary management, and a management team that focuses on improving the team instead of going back to a time that still splits opinions among fans.

The situation has changed as well. Edmonton is not a team in the middle of a long rebuilding process. It is a team under pressure to make the playoffs, and every decision made by the management needs to reflect that importance.

Chiarelli might get another chance somewhere else. In the league, people with extensive experience keep appearing again, and his name still has a good reputation in hiring discussions.
