We might find out what Alex Ovechkin’s future looks like when the NHL Draft happens.
The star player for the Washington Capitals has mentioned he doesn’t know if he wants to stop playing or keep going. His deal with the Capitals is ending, and he is taking his time this offseason to talk about what to do next with his family.
The issue is that the Capitals need to get ready for a busy offseason as they aim to return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs next season, whether Ovechkin is part of the team or not.
“We’re giving him some space to step back from the season and to think things over while discussing with his family,” Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick told reporters yesterday. “We’ll keep supporting him as he figures out what he wants. We will have a plan ready whether he stays or goes. ”
Patrick also mentioned June 26th, the date of the 2026 NHL Draft, as a gentle deadline for Ovechkin’s decision.
“Preferably, we’d like to know before the draft, but I believe he deserves to take his time, and we’ll deal with whatever information he gives us,” Patrick explained. “We’re in a situation where we’re trying to win,” he added. “We have a solid team, and we want to bring in more players. We’re in a good financial position this offseason, allowing us to explore different options,” Patrick said.
Knowing Ovechkin’s choice will help Patrick plan some changes this offseason, and the exciting part is that Patrick wants to make some significant changes.
“I believe we are in the best position we have ever been in for trading. We have some good draft picks and promising young players. There are certain players we’re not willing to let go in these trades,” Patrick mentioned. “Looking at it that way, we have plenty of resources. If a good chance comes up, we want to take it.”
