Elliotte Friedman claims that Kris Knoblauch, the head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, and the club are in advanced talks with Chicago to sign defenseman Connor Murphy.
Stan Bowman, the general manager, is searching for someone well-known to help reinforce a defense that has not been very reliable with the March 6 deadline approaching.
The Oilers have been rumored to be interested in Murphy, a 32-year-old defensive specialist with a $4.4 million salary cap cost, for nearly two years.
Edmonton currently sits in third place in the Pacific Division with 66 points, but their average number of goals allowed is a significant concern. Knoblauch needs Murphy’s “strong skills” and ability to kill penalties to support a goalkeeping tandem that is experiencing difficulties.
The 6-foot-4 defenseman has played well for the Blackhawks this season, with 84 blocked shots and 58 hits in 58 games. Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse would be able to concentrate more on scoring goals and carrying the ball up the field thanks to his skill for spending a lot of time in the defensive zone.
According to reports, Chicago is prepared to contribute a portion of Murphy’s salary, which would be a “great help” for the Oilers, who have a limited budget.
It is likely that a young player and a mid-round draft selection will be traded back to Chicago.
