Yzerman served as the Red Wings front office’s leader from April 2019 until last month, when he was appointed to a senior advisor position.
Christopher Ilitch, the owner, is now collaborating with an external business to locate a replacement. Here’s the twist. They’re allegedly in the market for an analytical and data-driven general manager.
For a company that has depended much on traditional scouting tactics for years, this is a significant move.
Since the move, Shawn Horcoff has been in charge of the daily responsibilities of the general manager. However, that authority does not extend to transactions.
Detroit is currently a team without complete front-office authority, going into an off-season that already needed guidance.
Why this hire is made even more difficult by the schedule
After a difficult season, the Red Wings have finished. With 92 points, they ended 41-31-10, placing them 16th overall and sixth in the Atlantic Division.

This wasn’t a team that was one piece away, as evidenced by a -17 goal difference. It genuinely needed structural change, and right now, it is implementing that adjustment without a GM in total control.
In December of 2024, Todd McLellan was re-hired and is still on the bench. He’s coaching for a front office that’s presently in limbo, awaiting hirings that will influence his roster.
Hiring an executive who prioritizes analytics is an admission that data can make up for what scouting overlooked. It’s a reasonable bet in today’s NHL, but it’s also a gamble on someone who doesn’t yet exist.
Patience is indicated by hiring a search firm. Additionally, it indicates that Ilitch is not eager to promote from within, and that alone should concern anyone who is hoping Horcoff will be hired permanently.
Detroit supporters have been waiting years for leadership. No one has stated when that will change, and they are now seeing a search committee rather than a front office.
