Travis Green, the previous head coach, was taken off guard by Brady Tkachuk’s trade request, and he didn’t conceal his disappointment at losing the captain of Ottawa.
Green made his first public statement since Tkachuk was moved to the Florida Panthers when he finally spoke about the breakup on the 100% Hockey podcast.
About three to four weeks after Ottawa’s season concluded, general manager Steve Staios informed the coach of the request. He was surprised by both the decision and the time.
Green called the event “unfortunate” and confessed that he was “a little surprised” when Tkachuk said he wanted to leave.
Green didn’t avoid the issue when questioned outright about whether the news had made him angry.
He gave a short response that showed how much the request had affected the Senators’ locker room. “A little bit,” he said.
Travis Green was deeply affected by the defeat.
Green’s decision to coach Ottawa was largely influenced by Tkachuk. He saw the captain as a key component of the team’s leadership and anticipated that he would continue to play a role in its advancement.
As a result, the request was more complicated than just a roster problem. Green had made plans around Tkachuk’s emotional advantage, physical presence, and position inside the team’s top six.
While trade negotiations were taking place, Green elected not to get in touch with the winger. Before contacting him, he gave Tkachuk, his agents, and Staios permission to manage the business.
Green stated that following the transfer, they engaged in a fruitful conversation. Because he previously played with Brady’s father, Keith Tkachuk, his history with the family is also important.
In the deal that happened on June 21, the Senators obtained one second-round selection and three first-round picks. Later, Ottawa utilized one of those first-round picks to get William Eklund from the San Jose Sharks.
Green is still confident in Ottawa’s younger core, but his remarks demonstrate that the departure had an impact. It is anticipated that the coaches will make changes to the lineup. It feels different to lose the captain after thinking he was committed.
The departure of Tkachuk concluded a significant era for the Senators. Green’s direct answer indicated that the choice was not accepted in secret behind the bench.
