The hockey community and former head coach Bob Hartley are grieving the death of Alexei Murygin at the age of 39.
The passing of its former goalie was announced by Amur Khabarovsk on July 31. Murygin was initially diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2019 and had since experienced a major sickness.
The Russian netminder spent over ten years developing a well-respected career in the KHL. He recorded 28 shutouts, won 113 games, and played in 306 games.
Amur, Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, Avangard Omsk, Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, Neftekhimik, and Kunlun Red Star are among the teams Murygin has played for.
He had his greatest season in 2015–16 playing for Lokomotiv. At the moment, Murygin established a KHL record by posting 13 shutouts in the regular season.
He also went a remarkable 302 minutes and 11 seconds without allowing a goal, which was later beaten by Timur Bilyalov.
Alexei Murygin established a long-term connection with Montreal.
Murygin’s route crossed with many well-known players from the Montreal Canadiens, even if he never played in the NHL.
He shared the locker room with Alexei Emelin and David Desharnais during the 2018–19 season. Bob Hartley coached that team.
Murygin’s name became even more well-known among Montreal supporters thanks to that friendship. Even though a transfer to North America never occurred, there were also rumors that the goalie might be interested in playing in the NHL throughout his career.
Statistics paled in comparison to the significance of his narrative. Murygin, after receiving his diagnosis, returned to professional hockey with the same poise and tenacity that had characterized his performance in the crease.
After his playing career, he went on to coach, sharing his knowledge with aspiring goalkeepers. He did more than merely save lives, shutout opponents, and spend nights protecting a lead.
Murygin’s family and loved ones received condolences from the KHL. Former teammates and supporters throughout Russian hockey have honored a reliable goalie and a highly valued locker-room presence.
Despite the fact that Murygin never played in Montreal during his career, Canadiens fans will not soon forget the link he established with Hartley, Desharnais, and Emelin. A goaltender whose determination extended far beyond the blue paint has been lost to hockey.
