Todd McLellan now faces a larger trade problem thanks to Dylan Larkin, and Anaheim may now be at the center of it.
The new point is not that Larkin desires to leave. The board already contains that component. The actual market may be emerging around him thanks to the new viewpoint.
Jeff Marek suggested that Anaheim was a team to keep an eye on and even gave a hypothetical structure involving Mason McTavish and other players. While this isn’t a done thing, it shows you how serious the Ducks’ fit appears from the outside.
That would be a huge turn of events for Joel Quenneville and Pat Verbeek. Although Anaheim already has young centers, Larkin’s speed and 34 goals in 74 games would instantly change the top of their lineup.
The Ducks are also the kind of organization that might entice a player with potential. Although they are not a finished contender, a center like Larkin may see a genuine increase there thanks to their youthful talent.
Dallas poses a different sort of risk. Jim Nill’s team can provide a win-now proposal that few other teams can match, thus it makes sense that so many individuals are discussing the Stars, according to David Pagnotta.
That is what makes this harder for Detroit. On the move, Larkin is more than just a skipper. He’s a top-line center with an $8.7 million cap hit until 2030-31, and teams with genuine ambitions will be queuing up.

San Jose is easily comprehensible. Macklin Celebrini, a growing youthful core, and the sort of squad that could persuade Larkin that the future is coming sooner than expected are all in Mike Grier’s possession.
The Sharks are not the favorite as a result of that. Larkin’s willingness to consider a younger space with significant potential beyond the pure contender level makes them hazardous.
The sneaky one is Utah. Pagnotta included the Mammoth in the debate, and Andre Tourigny’s squad has enough organization and developing talent to at least make the call worthwhile.
Also, Utah is attempting to go from fascinating to serious. Especially for a team that is still forming its identity following the rebranding to the Mammoth, a center like Larkin would act swiftly.
For Steve Yzerman, that’s the tough part. It becomes more difficult to approach this as a short list with one clear response as more teams feel credible.
The true development for the Red Wings is this. San Jose, Dallas, Utah, and Anaheim are now more than simply rumor-board filler. Dylan Larkin’s market seems much broader than it did a few days ago, and they all have a hockey case.
