Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and Lindy Ruff have become part of Edmonton’s summer goalie dilemma.
Jeff Marek’s statement sparked a lot of discussions quickly.
The thought is that there might be something going on between the Oilers and the Sabres regarding Luukkonen.
At first glance, it makes sense why Edmonton would be interested. The Oilers still haven’t found a solid solution for their goalie situation, and every rumor during the summer always brings that same issue back up.
However, this doesn’t mean Luukkonen is the right choice.
If this is the big move Stan Bowman is considering, it’s reasonable to question what exactly would change for Edmonton.
The main concern about the Oilers has not changed. They still require a goalie who can secure a series, not just kick off one.
Luukkonen has not shown that kind of reliability in the playoffs against Montreal.
He struggled during that series, and that’s the part Edmonton should really focus on.
Jeff Marek: Maybe there’s something brewing with the Oilers… about [Sabres’ goalie] Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen – Daily Faceoff Live (5/19)
Oilers fans are worried after a surprising new goalie contender has come up. This is why the rumor feels uncertain.
If the Oilers sign Luukkonen and he gives them the same shaky playoff performances that Buffalo just experienced, then Edmonton is back at square one.
The same anxiety.
The same distractions.
The same concerns each time the puck gets close to the net.
This is not a minor problem for the team.
Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have reached a point where the team can’t keep trying out goalies who are still questionable. Edmonton needs a solid solution, or at least something much more reliable.
Luukkonen does have skill. No one can argue that.
But if the sales talk is mainly that he could perform better in a different place, that isn’t convincing enough for a team facing so much stress.
The Oilers have relied on that kind of optimism in the past.
It often turns out the same way.
That is why this gossip should make fans feel worried, not thrilled. Luukkonen could be a player to consider. He isn’t a name that should make Edmonton believe their goalie situation is solved.
And if that really is the answer, then the Oilers still face the same issue they had earlier.
Just with a different goalie wearing the mask.
