Mason Greenwood confirmed his resignation from Old Trafford, and Manchester United is now looking for a team that will provide him with the right environment
The player and United both released statements on Monday announcing that the player would continue his career elsewhere. Following a ferocious outcry to news of his return to the club, the announcement was made.
According to GOAL, United is currently collaborating with Greenwood’s family to find him a club that will give him the right environment to advance his career.
Although it is unclear where the player will go, United are actively discussing his future. Serie A had already been touted as a potential destination, with Greenwood linked to a move to the league by the Italian publication La Repubblica Juventus
In January 2022, Greenwood’s United contract was cancelled as a result of his arrest on charges of domestic violence and sexual assault. He was charged in October, but the Crown Prosecution Service has since dropped the case because important witnesses withdrew and new information came to light.
Despite their continued conviction that Greenwood did not commit the acts alleged against him, United has now concluded their own internal investigation and decided that the player would not be able to continue his career with the club.
Unknown is whether United will receive a transfer fee if they attempt to sell Greenwood or if they will mutually terminate his contract to decide his future. In 2025, his present contract will be up.
The transfer window ends on September 1 in England, but it remains open for teams in other European nations – and abroad, including Saudi Arabia – for much longer.
