John Chayka has already described Darren Raddysh’s signing with Jim Hiller’s Leafs as a daring action worth making.
That is the situation here. Toronto didn’t bring in a strong depth player. Then Chayka publicly admitted that the club recognized there was some risk associated with the trade after the Leafs traded Tampa Bay a 2026 fifth-round selection for Raddysh.
It’s easy to see why Toronto gambled in that way. Raddysh recently finished a 70-point season, which does not fit the description of an edge-shuffling fringe blue-liner.
Additionally, he set a Lightning record for goals by a defenseman with 22. That kind of attacking push from the blue line alters a power play and the way teams defend entries.
It’s more complex than simple manufacture. Toronto is investing in a weapon that can immediately alter special teams since Raddysh led all NHL defensemen with 10 power-play goals.
Chayka’s statement is significant because it demonstrates that this was not a passive addition. Raddysh played 22:42 a night on average, and the Leafs obviously believe that much effort can sustain itself in a bigger market.
