Mason Greenwood’s future at Manchester United will be decided before the next Premier League season begins. Since the club suspended the 21-year-old in January and the allegations against him were dropped earlier this year, an internal investigation is being conducted at Old Trafford, the player has not played for the Red Devils.

It is unclear whether the former England striker would be accepted back into the team at Old Trafford because club authorities have taken their time after their investigation to make a final decision. Erik ten Hag responded when asked about Greenwood during the team’s preseason tour of the US that he has given his own opinion but will respect whatever United decides to do with him.

“It’s a club decision,” Ten Hag said. I have certainly voiced my opinions, but the club has the final say. That is a fact that we must all acknowledge. I won’t say much about it, but I will say that I expressed my opinion, so let’s wait and see what happens

Meanwhile, Manchester United veteran Wayne Rooney has previously stated that a fresh start abroad would be the best option for all parties, with a move allowing Greenwood to restart his playing career away from the glare of United.

“It leaves Mason Greenwood in a position where he is stuck,” Rooney explained to The Athletic. “So it’s a bad situation for Mason because I’m sure he just wants to play football, but it’s almost a catch 22 for the club, its image, and ensuring they make the right decisions.”

“I believe Mason’s best option right now is to leave the club and develop elsewhere.” He needs to get back into the game because it’s been a long time. With everything that has happened and how long the internal investigation has taken, Mason probably simply needs to go play and attempt to get his career back on track.”

Greenwood joined United at the age of six and has made 129 senior appearances for the club since his professional debut four years ago. He has also earned a solitary cap for England, but has not played for the Three Lions since breaking Covid-19 regulations in Iceland in 2020.
