Max Verstappen’s victory trophy was shattered on the podium at the Hungarian Grand Prix by Lando Norris. The McLaren driver accidently knocked the Red Bull driver’s trophy off the top step and onto the ground when he deliberately smashed his champagne bottle against the podium.

Social media videos showed the porcelain cup thudding on the ground as the drivers rejoiced. The current world champion has since received an apology from McLaren over social media.

They wrote on Twitter, “Sorry Max.” Red Bull then seemed to admit that Norris had really harmed the trophy. Red Bull responded to McLaren’s statement by saying, “We can’t take you anywhere, but we’re pleased to have you up there with us. We’ll require some adhesive.

Pictures posted online showed Verstappen leaving the podium with both pieces of the trophy as the base had broken off. The trophy for the Hungarian Grand Prix winners is manufactured entirely by hand out of porcelain. They are estimated to cost £34,000 (€40,000) and take six months to produce.

As they responded to the incident on social media, F1 fans clearly found the humor in the situation. I was curious if anyone else caught this lmao, @julianamarie729 wrote. At the same time, @Ne_li_ma tweeted, “That’s the most Lando thing that could have happened.”

“I think Max has had enough already,” @nikkitbh remarked. Furthermore, @Hannah_curtis98 said, “It’s so obvious that was going to happen.”

It was posted by @graceclare_18: “Not them just standing there staring at it on the floor.” In the meanwhile, @norrisreads believes the FIA has to alter the podium protocol to stop a repeat of the situation. You guys need to remove the awards before Lando picks up the champagne, she remarked.

After his previous podium result at the British Grand Prix, Norris took a similar action. At Silverstone, the Briton smashed his champagne bottle again, sending one of the top three trophies rolling off the top step.

In order to secure a second straight P2 finish, Norris overtook Lewis Hamilton at the start of the race in Hungary. The 23-year-old acknowledged that Verstappen and Red Bull are still far from being defeated by the British manufacturer.

Despite eight top-three finishes in his career, Norris is still looking for his first F1 victory. Norris responded, “The guys are too quick,” when asked if he could win this year. Unless anything goes wrong or they make a mistake. We are currently quite pleased with the progress we have made, in my opinion.

“To move from where we were five races ago, often failing to get out of Q1, to competing for pole and the top three spots. For now, we’ll accept it, and our time will come later in the year.”
