Mike Babcock received a further reminder from Connor McDavid of what Edmonton’s new head coach has in store for him this season.
In NHL 27, McDavid is the first player to achieve a 99 overall rating in EA Sports NHL history.
The announcement, which was released on Monday, places the captain of the Edmonton Oilers in a position that has never been reached by an NHL player in the video game series. Another distinction that solely belongs to him now belongs to No. 97.
It follows yet another successful regular season. McDavid played in every game of the Oilers’ 82-game season, scoring 48 goals and 138 points.
His production exceeded even-strength scoring. Edmonton’s top unit remained largely connected to McDavid’s ability to create with the puck, as he finished with 13 power-play goals and 41 power-play assists.
At an intriguing period for Edmonton, the individual recognition is also granted. McDavid is entering the first season of the two-year contract extension he signed with the Oilers.
McDavid is under increasing pressure as another season gets underway.
The deal, which runs until 2027-28, has an average annual worth of $12.5 million, giving Edmonton a clear window with its captain under contract.
What McDavid and the Oilers are after won’t be affected by the 99 rating. The Stanley Cup is still the award that might alter the memory of this Edmonton period, even if he has had personal recognition for years.
The fact that so much output has already gathered is shown by his career numbers. Over the course of 794 regular season games, McDavid has accumulated 1,220 points.
When the Oilers return to the ice, there is also a coaching change waiting for him. Mike Babcock was hired as Edmonton’s new coach on June 23, giving McDavid’s next push a new voice behind the bench.
Babcock inherits a skipper who can still win games using controlled entrances, neutral zone speed, and consistent puck control.
The NHL 27 announcement serves as yet another reminder of the level of excellence that surrounds McDavid in Edmonton. It’s historic to be the first 99-rated player, but the bigger story begins when the puck drops.
McDavid has a distinct personal difference. The Oilers must now translate that level of supremacy into the playoff outcome they have been pursuing.
