Two Eastern teams are currently vying for a real Oilers decision involving Darnell Nurse and Mike Babcock.
The trade request itself isn’t what makes it new. The market around it is what it is. According to the latest reports, Edmonton has more than one live lane to work since both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have a strong interest in Nurse.
Nurse isn’t just a cap dump at the bottom of the roster, which is why that’s significant. Teams are still considering a defender who can manage volume after he played in all 82 games during the 2025–26 season and ended with 24 points.
The pressure point is still the contract. Nurse’s cap cost through 2029–30 is $9.25 million, which made this narrative feel difficult even before interest increased.
The tone has now shifted. Stan Bowman no longer has just one exit option if two teams are actually in. He has a chance to play teams against one other and work for a better hockey return.
