It’s finally done.
Jack Campbell, a seasoned National Hockey League goaltender, used social media over the weekend to declare his official retirement from professional hockey.
Campbell announced his new job as a life coach during the course of the announcement, which, in my perspective, had the unpleasant impact of making the entire event seem a little bit disingenuous. Campbell, on the other hand, made it plain that he was quitting the NHL to pursue this new career.
In a statement that went along with his Instagram post, Campbell wrote, “It wasn’t easy to leave hockey.” “It provided me with more than I could have ever dreamed of. However, I’ve come to realize over the past few years that the activity that provided me the most gratification wasn’t preventing goals; rather, it was assisting individuals in realizing their potential.”
Campbell’s last two NHL seasons were disappointing, as he appeared in only five games for the Edmonton Oilers during the 2023-24 season, which he mostly spent with the Bakersfield Condors of the American Hockey League. Campbell entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program in October of 2024 rather than making a single appearance for the Red Wings in his last season with the Detroit Red Wings in 2024–25. Campbell would only participate in 14 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate, that season, finishing with an .893 save percentage in the AHL. At that moment, his career appeared to be over.
Campbell did not participate in the AHL or NHL during the 2025–26 campaign.
