Glen Gulutzan has just lost one of Dallas’s top young players in a move that rocks the Stars on July 1, as Mavrik Bourque is out.
Bourque wasn’t some peripheral name on the Dallas board, which is why Elliotte Friedman’s story had such an impact.
He was one of the room’s few young attackers that believed he had another gear to go.
Stars supporters are hurt by this trade as a result.
Bourque is twenty-four years old, can play center or wing, and has just shown that he can handle significant NHL playing time on a team that is in the running for the playoffs.
He backed it up with a bigger role alongside talented forwards after ending the season with 20 goals and 41 points. That isn’t the profile. Dallas must proceed with caution.
Additionally, the Stars weren’t trading from a position of weakness in the standings.
This seems even more like a planned roster choice, given that Dallas ended with 112 points and a +52 goal differential.
At that point, the narrative changes. When such a strong team moves a player like Bourque before his peak, it generally believes that the return will benefit the squad today, not three years from now.
While the return is yet unknown, it must be a sizable bounty. Dallas made more than just moving a promising young man. It shifted a cost-controlled forward who appeared prepared for a greater top-six surge.
Maverik Bourque, a premium young asset, was just traded by Dallas.
Bourque also fell within the age range that all contenders must defend. He provided speed, skill, and flexibility to the Stars without the cumbersome cap burden that often accompany established offenses.
That’s important in Dallas. Cheap contributions aren’t extras on this roster since Mikko Rantanen has a $12,000,000 cap charge and Tyler Seguin is at $9,850,000. They belong to the arithmetic.
Gulutzan is entering a club designed to go after right away, and Jim Nill has gained trust. However, this kind of swing is only logical if it results in a player or group with a noticeable effect.
The wager from Nashville’s perspective is straightforward to understand. Since the Predators ended the season with 86 points and a minus-22 differential, adding a young scorer with upside fits exactly where their squad needs life.
The pressure is more significant for Dallas. Bourque was one of their most attractive internal responses. It’s unlikely that the return will be modest if he’s gone, and the following action should explain why.
Since you won’t be recognized for the notion after trading one of your top young players. Only what returns is judged.
