The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs gave the NHL something new: it had the highest number of viewers for the opening weekend ever.
NHL Public Relations shared today that about 1.53 million people in the U. S. watched on ESPN, ABC, TNT, and TruTV during the first two days of the 2026 playoffs.
This is an increase of 81 percent compared to the first weekend of the 2025 playoffs. This is not just a small change. It’s not just because of a lucky Saturday. It’s a real 81 percent growth.
The biggest audience for cable came from the Flyers and Penguins, with 2.1 million viewers on ESPN. This is a strong rivalry showing very strong numbers.
Minnesota and Dallas weren’t far behind. The Wild and Stars attracted 1.9 million viewers on cable. Boston and Buffalo also did well with 1.7 million, still impressive for a sport that has struggled for attention in mainstream America for years.
The TNT viewership tells a similar story. Montreal and Tampa Bay had 1.4 million viewers for their Game 1, and Colorado versus Los Angeles pulled in 1.3 million viewers.
The NHL’s U. S. Ratings Issue Might Be Over
Think about what the numbers for Montreal and Tampa Bay actually mean. A Canadian team facing a team from Florida, shown on TNT, grabbing 1.4 million American viewers in Game 1. That would have been impossible to imagine five years ago.
And this doesn’t even include any local networks. The Canadian markets, which usually strongly impact hockey’s fan base in this country, are not even counted here.
For years, the league has been told that it’s just a niche sport in the United States. But that idea is becoming harder to maintain every day.
One comment in the NHL Public Relations responses summed it up perfectly: “Playoffs got me more hyped than a cat on catnip. ” It might not be fancy language, but it feels real. The excitement around this playoff season seems different.
The games played a big part as well. On Tuesday night, Utah won against Vegas with a score of 3-2. Colorado managed to beat LA in overtime. Boston got the better of Buffalo with a 4-2 victory away from home. Tampa won over Montreal in overtime. There is a lot of exciting hockey happening.
However, just having good TV ratings isn’t enough to secure a championship. The important question now is if the quality of play can keep going strong throughout all four rounds, or if some uneven matchups early on will slow things down before May even arrives.
