Friday evening, one of the Florida Panthers’ longest-serving behind-the-scenes employees was arrested by authorities in South Florida, prompting a quick response from the team.
On Friday, Teddy Richards, the Head Equipment Manager, was taken into custody in Coral Springs and placed in Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Main Jail. He is accused of domestic assault and unlawfully utilizing 911 services.
The Panthers immediately responded. Through official channels, the organization issued a statement saying it was aware of the circumstances.
“Teddy Richards, our equipment manager, was arrested, and the Florida Panthers organization is aware of the occurrence. According to the team’s statement, “he would be suspended from all team operations and facilities immediately and until further notice.”
Richards’ NHL career dates back much further, but he has been a consistent member of the Panthers since the 2016–17 season. Before joining Florida, he worked with the Pittsburgh Penguins and was a member of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2016.
He became even more remarkable in South Florida. With three championship rings over his career, Richards was a member of the Panthers’ coaching staff for both of their consecutive Cup wins in 2024 and 2025.
Richards also competed for the United States on the global level in addition to his NHL responsibilities. He was a member of Team USA’s equipment crew at the 2026 Winter Olympics and the 4 Nations Face-Off.
Richards was still being held in custody at the Broward Main Jail as of Friday night. Neither the team nor authorities have disclosed any additional details regarding the circumstances of his arrest.
The accusations are significant. In Florida, accusations of domestic abuse have major legal ramifications, and the additional layer of the charge for unauthorized use of 911 services enhances the case’s complexity.
But, by prohibiting Richards from all club facilities and activities while the inquiry is pending, the Panthers have immediately drawn a clear line.
Whether one of the most decorated equipment managers in recent NHL history has any future left with the organization could depend on how the situation develops over the next days and weeks.
