With San Jose and two other teams now included, the Edmonton Oilers are back in the thick of the Darnell Nurse trade market, which has suddenly become hot again.
The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta stated on Monday that the Sharks and Oilers have lately resumed trade negotiations over Nurse.
The Anaheim Ducks and Philadelphia Flyers are also in discussions, according to Pagnotta.
And here’s the twist that sets this apart from a standard gossip: Before any agreement could be made, Nurse would have to give his approval, just like Anaheim.
The Nurse’s salary cap is $9.25 million.
That is not a number. Without knowing what the player wishes, you go.
He has the advantage here, period.
The asking price is made more complicated by the numbers from the nurse.
This year, the 31-year-old defense player participated in all 82 regular season games, recording 7 goals, 17 assists, and a -12 rating.
Without scoring a point, he went minus-0 in six playoff games.
On a scoreboard, a $9.25 million defenseman isn’t supposed to look like that.
He had a +5 rating in his final 10 games of the regular season, playing in 5 games with 1 assist. Therefore, there was some vitality in the underlying numbers at the conclusion.
However, any team that takes on that contract is betting on a bounce back, which is far from guaranteed.
The Flyers ended the season in third place in their division, with 98 points. They are ready for a veteran presence on the blue line thanks to their cap structure and organizational appetite.
The Ducks’ final ten games were a tough 2-6-2 run, but their overall record was 43-33-6. Prior to the ceiling’s shutdown, Pat Verbeek could try to acquire some expertise.
San Jose is the fascinating one. General manager Mike Grier has made it clear that he wants to continue developing the Sharks, who had a 39-35-8 record this season and saw a substantial improvement.
Only Nurse can currently respond to the question of whether or not that structure includes a $9.25 million defenceman who must agree to the agreement.
