The sudden and unexpected death of Claude Lemieux, a long-time National Hockey League player who went on to become an NHL player agent, left the hockey community in shock earlier this summer, and sadly, an already tragic story took another tragic turn last week when multiple reports regarding the circumstances of Lemieux’s death appeared online.

Those reports contained numerous assertions regarding that tragic day, assertions that the family is currently contesting, at least in part. Brendan Lemieux, a former NHL player with a rather bad reputation, took to social media to denounce those who had falsified information about his father’s passing, resulting in the Lemieux family’s opposition.

On my dad Claude Lemieux’s birthday, numerous news organizations ran pieces containing private information regarding his passing, some of which were true and many of which were entirely made up. The tragic reality of today’s media environment is that clicks and interaction take precedence over truth, respect, and fundamental human decency.

 

However, the hockey community is unique. We possess a spine. We pick what and who we support, placing a high value on family, respect, and loyalty.

 

I respectfully request that the hockey community abstain from interacting with these fictitious tales and afford our family the room and respect to privately mourn my recently deceased father. We will eventually discuss what transpired with my family in the hope that it might assist others who are having difficulties.

 

Please honor Claude’s memory by celebrating the life he lived as the ferocious competitor, the four-time Stanley Cup winner, the devoted father and grandfather, and the man who left an enduring impression on our sport and so many of us.

 

Regrettably, this is not the first time the hockey community has experienced a circumstance of this nature, and I can see why it would cause some people to question what actually occurred in this instance. Having said that, it’s vital to keep in mind that there is a grieving family, and that’s before we even mention Lemieux’s ex-teammates, coworkers, pals, and cherished ones.

 

I certainly wouldn’t want to risk being on Brendan’s bad side, so hopefully his message will get through.
