The Philadelphia Flyers shocked the National Hockey League this summer when they stated that they had inked Anaheim Ducks striker Leo Carlsson to a record-breaking offer sheet, a 5-year contract worth an average of $18 million per season in annual value and salary cap impact.
While the number surprised both fans and experts, it probably won’t come as a shock to people who work in the NHL. During the most recent episode of their podcast, Matthew and Brady Tkachuk provided their opinions on the historic offer sheet, and we heard from two of the NHL’s most prominent personalities on the subject this past week.
Matthew concurred with his younger brother, saying, “Yeah, certainly.”
While there has been much discussion about whether the Ducks were right to match the offer sheet the Flyers gave to Carlsson, it appears that there is no disagreement about the Tkachuks. Matthew was crystal clear about the fact that the money the Ducks would have gotten if they hadn’t matched was not even remotely sufficient.
Matthew said, “He’s worth eight first rounders.” “Maybe much more.”
It appears that the Tkachuk brothers believe this contract will have repercussions for the whole league, and we are already experiencing some possibly severe effects for the Ducks as a result of this offer sheet.
Matthew commented, “It’s undoubtedly one of those types of transactions that kinda shifts the perspective for everyone else in the NHL for years to come.”
