Players reportedly had a private talk after Sidney Crosby showed up, and many people are discussing the results.
Insider Chris Johnston said that Macklin Celebrini will stay as captain for Canada even though Crosby is here, and Crosby will wear an “A” as the alternate captain. This choice came after a conversation among the players in the locker room, where they chose Celebrini to keep the “C.”
This shows a strong level of trust in the 19-year-old star.
Celebrini is already making waves as the youngest captain Team Canada has ever selected at the men’s world championships, and he is also the youngest player on the team. After the amazing season he had, it’s easy to see why his teammates supported him.
In his second season in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks, Celebrini scored an impressive 115 points in 82 games, breaking a team record and placing fourth in scoring in the NHL. He also became a finalist for the Ted Lindsay Award, competing with Connor McDavid and Nikita Kucherov.
However, it’s still surprising to see Crosby step back from being the captain. Crosby is often known as “Captain Canada” in the hockey community, and this shows his humility and leadership qualities once more.
“There’s no way Sid was ever going to take the C in this situation,” said Penguins insider Josh Yohe.
Joining Celebrini and Crosby as leaders are John Tavares and Ryan O’Reilly, who are alternate captains.
Now, Canada will try to bounce back from last year’s disappointing fifth-place finish and aim for their first world championship gold medal since 2023.
