The commentator didn’t hold back after a disputed penalty shifted the flow of Game 4.
The rivalry between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres has intensified, and it looks like the announcers are getting caught up in it as well.
On Tuesday night, during Game 4 of the intense second-round matchup in Montreal, Rasmus Dahlin was hit in the face by Alexandre Carrier’s stick, which led to a high-sticking penalty. After Dahlin showed the referees that his lower lip was bleeding, they decided to make the penalty a double minor.
However, ESPN’s announcer Sean McDonough seemed skeptical.
While commentating, McDonough questioned if the cut was actually new, hinting that Dahlin might have had the injury prior to the incident. He even suggested that Dahlin could have been trying to make it bleed again to get the four-minute penalty.
This controversial incident quickly gained more attention when Buffalo took advantage of the power play, scoring the tying goal from a weird bounce that got past Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes.
The Sabres ultimately came back and won Game 4 with a score of 3-2, tying up the series and escalating what is becoming one of the most intense rivalries in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
