MUTV and BBC agree new decision over Manchester United penalty incident

Manchester United were defeated at Old Trafford by a dubious penalty that favoured Manchester City, adding to the growing perception that referees and VAR rulings have not been kind to the Red Devils this season.

The game featured yet another difficult decision against Manchester United, with the odds seemingly stacked against them against their closest rivals, City. The issue centred on a penalty granted to City in the first half after VAR intervention, which stated that Rasmus Hojlund had hauled back Rodri within the penalty box.

Erling Haaland successfully converted the penalty, giving City the lead, which proved crucial in their 3-0 victory.

While it is unclear whether City would have won regardless, the disputed nature of the penalty call only added to United supporters’ sense of unfairness.

The decision was thoroughly discussed on MUTV during both the match coverage and post-game analysis, and it left a strong impression on the commentators.

Former Manchester United defender David May was critical, saying, “Yes, there’s a little tumble, but if that’s a penalty, you’d be giving four or five penalties every game.” It’s deplorable.”

Former United trainee Danny Webber supported this sentiment, questioning why VAR was used, emphasising that there was no big protest from the players. He also drew a similarity to a similar situation on the edge of the box featuring Marcus Rashford.

The decision was criticised by BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Chris Waddle, who agreed that the penalty call was excessively harsh. Waddle emphasised how prevalent it is for players to hold each other in the game and suggested that following this tight standard could result in an excessive number of penalties in each match.

Manchester United fans were visibly frustrated and dissatisfied, with some drawing parallels to past occurrences, such as Rasmus Hojlund’s scenario against Arsenal, when he was hauled down inside the area but no penalty was awarded.
